What Is Oleanolic Acid? The Science Behind Our Key Hair Growth Ingredient
Share
At Tricholoy+, we believe you deserve to know exactly what's in your hair products — and more importantly, why it's there. This article explains one of our hero ingredients: oleanolic acid.
What Is Oleanolic Acid?
Oleanolic acid is a naturally occurring triterpenoid compound found in a variety of plants, including olive leaves (Olea europaea), rosemary, and lavender. It has been studied extensively in the scientific literature for a range of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory properties and, most relevant to haircare, its role in inhibiting an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase.
Why Does 5-Alpha Reductase Matter for Hair?
5-alpha reductase is an enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Elevated DHT levels at the scalp are the leading biological cause of androgenetic alopecia — commonly known as pattern hair loss or hair thinning — in both men and women. DHT binds to hair follicle receptors and progressively miniaturizes them, leading to thinner, shorter hair strands over time.
Several peer-reviewed studies have identified oleanolic acid as a potential inhibitor of 5-alpha reductase, suggesting it may help interrupt this pathway and support healthier hair follicle environments.
Why We Put It in Our Shampoo
Many hair care brands use oleanolic acid as a minor trace ingredient — close to the bottom of the ingredient list, where its concentration is too low to be meaningful. We don't do that. In our Volumizing Shampoo, oleanolic acid is included at a meaningful concentration as a primary functional active, not a marketing checkbox.
We pair it with biotin (vitamin B7), which supports keratin production — the structural protein that makes up your hair — and a sulfate-free cleansing base that cleans without stripping the scalp's natural protective barrier.
The Honest Bottom Line
Oleanolic acid won't regrow a completely dormant follicle overnight. No topical ingredient will. But as part of a consistent hair care routine, it provides a scientifically grounded mechanism for supporting scalp health and reducing one of the primary drivers of hair miniaturization.
That's why it's in our formula. Not because it sounds good in marketing — because the science supports it.
